COLIN RYAN
FOUNDER & MANAGING DIRECTOR
Colin played football and Gaelic football growing up in the north west of Ireland. He came through the academy at Sligo Rovers F.C. and was involved with the first team before leaving for Dublin to begin his education as a Pharmacist in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He graduated the Masters in Pharmacy program at RCSI with first class honours in 2010 and began working as a community pharmacist in Dublin. Throughout this period Colin continued to play sport, focusing mainly on Gaelic football in his twenties. He won multiple county titles with his club and represented his home county of Leitrim in the All-Ireland football league and championship.
In 2016 Colin moved to Bermuda where he would go on to become the Lead Pharmacist at People’s ACW in King Edward Memorial Hospital. Through his involvement with local football team Robin Hood F.C., Colin became a member of the Bermuda Olympic Association Medical Committee. In February 2021, Colin completed the International Olympic Committee Drugs in Sport course.
need for change
During his time playing elite sport Colin became concerned with the discrepancy between the way medication was treated in the pharmacy and in the sporting environment. The proper care and respect with which medications were treated in Pharmacy were often worryingly missing with players and sporting organisations. Colin felt this could lead to real problems for players’ health, safety and wellbeing, like Inadvertent Doping, Adverse Drug Reactions (including drug side effects) and Suboptimal Performance.
INADVERTENT DOPING
ADVERSE DRUG REACTIONS
SUBOPTIMAL PERFORMANCE
Potential ramifications for the player from these problems include:
negative health impacts
suspension
loss of earnings and reputational damage
Potential ramifications for the organisation include:
player unavailability
exposure to legal action
reputational damage
These problems and negative consequences are often completely avoidable.
Colin saw that players and organisations could look to Pharmacy for ways to avoid these problems. He set about figuring out which aspects of pharmacy could successfully be transferred to the sporting arena. He realized that having systems in place, through Education and Medicines Management procedures, could significantly reduce the risk of problems. However, Colin understands that the area of medications and supplements can be complex and overwhelming for players. Giving players 365 Player Support from Sports Pharmacists to discuss any queries or concerns before taking a medication or supplement would act as a failsafe mechanism.
Colin felt there was an urgent need to address the problems that come with medications and supplements in sport. 365 Elite Sports Pharmacy was founded in 2021 to meet this need and to provide our innovative services to players and organisations. We protect the health and safety of the players and the reputation of their organisation.
